  1. 1.From what I gather this was a subject of quality for Hume as a way of bettering the ways philosophers conduct their way of thinking.
2.Hume describes that the first as considering man in an acting being. The first type makes us feel the differing spectrum dealing with things like good and evil and think its job is done if we feel our actions to be right.
3.The second questions deeper on what is truly the right and wrong. It argues that taking sensations and feelings to face value as way of knowing is illogical. This wishes for concert answers but has trouble finding it.
4.I would agree more for the latter simply because emotions can and will guide you down a path of life that is unjust and shaky if even slightly questioned.
    5. From Hume's way of Philosophy its would be labeled pragmatic since it takes on the notion to back up one's continuously unstable and easily weak in foundation thoughts with hard facts.

  2. 1. As mentioned in class, Descartes' philosophy was based more on quality than quantity. Although Descartes failed in his philosophy and came out with minimal conclusions his philosophy set the stage for later people. He did not write much and only wrote about very important questions which shows his need for quality of quantity.
    2. Hume describes the first treatment of philosophy as the correct way of doing philosophy. Those who practice this form of philosophy set up simple and striking ways to differentiate good and bad. This type of philosophy sets us into paths of virtue and its goal is to set us on the right path of happiness.
    3. The second way of moral philosophy is disgraceful. It limits human curiosity in every branch of knowledge. This type of philosophy is overworked and not as simple as the first type. This philosophy does not work for Hume because it is pure speculation and does not have concrete answers.
    4. I agree with the first type of philosophy because it comes to actual conclusions instead of purely given things that are not even fully true. The first type of moral philosophy leads the person to happiness and makes decision making simple instead of unnecessarily over-complicated. The principle of the first philosophy is much more simple to understand and follow which would lead it to be more popular.
    5. Hume's philosophy would be described at pragmatic because it is not speculative but instead brings out true answers. Hume's philosophy takes the moral questions of humans and gives them concrete answers. Hume's philosophy is about finding answers not about making more questions. His philosophy is relevant to human society and keeps people grounded and not stuck in the clouds looking for answers which are virtually impossible to get,
    6. Speculative philosophy can be harmful because it is difficult and produces no actual concrete answers. More questions are found and made due to the amount of interpretation which goes into this abstract philosophy. Speculative philosophy is important and even needed because it leads to the description of the obvious aspects of life. Speculation is necessary in art and literature because it makes the person active and makes the piece more interesting because they can inference what is going on in the piece.

  3. 1. In Descartes philosophy, he preferred quality over quantity in all aspects. This lead to the spreading of the idea that quality means more than quality, expressed in other philosophers following Descartes.
    2. Hume expressed that he believes those previous to present philosophers are usually more correct. They help following philosophers because they can expand on the previous beliefs.
    3. The second way is taking a more disappointing point of view, because they can not believe that there is a stable foundation for moral philosophy.
    4. Personally, I believe in the first way of philosophy because it is realistic, and if we use this way of philosophy, we will be able to decide what is a good mindset/philosophy and what is not.
    5. Hume's philosophy is most definitely pragmatic because with his philosophy there is a sense of procedure, and realism. He studies something, and with his ideas is simply able to find an answer. His way of philosophy could also be seen as defined as efficient.
    6. This ideas of "Speculative philosophy" is different because it only involves the philosopher, and what they see.It is also focusing on questions, and nothing may ever be certain. A problem that may arise from this view is that the senses might be heavily relied, on not used at all.

  4. 1. Descartes impact is more of a quality type then quantity. Descartes did not care how many truths and certainties he had in the end, but if he had any and how strong it was. He did not mind just having one or two.
    2. Hume describes the first treatment of philosophy as the better, more correct philosophy than the second one. These people use poetry and eloquence and are generally very smart people. They normally base their life off virtues.
    3. In the second way, Hume describes philosophy as the focus on man as a reasonable rather than an active being. They are dissatisfied with philosophy not having a base set (foundation) of morals and reasoning. Even though their speculations seem abstract, they are attempting to get approval of the wise.
    4. I believe in the first way of philosophy because the truths that are came up with are more reasonable and reliable. The second philosophy is too speculative and difficult to trust and understand.
    5. Hume's philosophy is pragmatic because in his first philosophy, it is based off finding certain truths and realism. This is the better way of doing it. Even though it may not be the easiest, it is practical and more preferred.
    6. The harm that is caused by speculative philosophy is it produces no certain answers that one can trust. Even though this is true it is important because it is vital to art. When one is painting, they do not want to use the first philosophy and stick only with truths, because then their art will be boring and simple. Rather, speculative philosophy here is important to allow one to infer and paint what they are seeing and speculating.

4.I believe more in the first way of philosophy because they are much more reliable sources rather than the other. The truths are more realistic and capable of grasping rather than the other wasnt so easy to comprehend.
    5. Hume's philosophy without a doubt is most pragmatic for he finds his truths and ideas and using those he finds the answers to questions.
    6. This sense of "Speculative Philosophy" by at most be a negative effect for its the speculation of that philosopher and the truths projected may or may not be truths. The sources may not be reliable at all.

    2. To Hume to first treatment of philosophy is the correct treatment. He is a big fan of the art because they show life and how it is not how it is thought.
    3. Hume seeing the second philosophy seems to focus on man as a reasonable beings not beings that are active.
    4. I believe in the first way of philosophy because the truths seem to have been tested. The second philosophy is too speculative. It is only thought not tested.
    5. Hume's philosophy seem to be pragmatic because in his first philosophy, it appears to come from certainty and tested ideas.
    6. The problem that speculative philosophy cause is its lack of certain and clear answers. However it still has an important place because it is vital to art. When making art one does not want to stick completely with what is true and certain because that will lose the audiences. Speculative philosophy is important because it allows one to infer.

  10. 1. Descartes's philosophy was definitely more about quality than quantity. By focusing on finding certain things and ideas, Descartes gave following generations of philosophers a solid basis to work with.
    2. Hume describes the first philosophy mentioned as the better philosophy. This is because philosophers who study this base it off of virtue.
    3. Hume describes the second way of moral philosophy as man being reasonable over active. This means Hume believes man is more dissatisfied because they cannot find the right way to deal with their problems.
    4. I believe more in the first way because of how efficient it is. Of the two, the first way produces results and is more understandable.

    6. The harm cause by speculative philosophy is found in the name, it is speculative. This leads to philosophers occupy themselves with problems that are above them. The positive in this philosophy is that it helps with people in the arts and accessing their creative more speculative parts of the mind.

  11. 1. Descartes' legacy was more about quality than quantity. The value of an an object was highly important to Descartes and his philosophy. Quality then became a large focus in the philosophy of later philosophers.

    2. Hume's first treatment was that man was born for action and was guided by his mind though desire and emotion. Man makes all of his decisions in life based on his desire and emotions.

    3. Hume describes moral philosophy in the second way by saying that man is more reasonable rather than being active. Man is worried less about how he acts and more about how he thinks.

    4. I agree with the second philosophy more because I think man should think more about what he does in order to make wiser and more knowledgeable decisions in life. These knowledgeable and wiser decisions will lead a man further in his life and with more thinking comes more truth.

    5. Hume's philosophy is somewhat pragmatic because it relies on chance and trial and error. Not all men may think the same and have the same desires so philosophy can not be deduced from that. A method may not be highly effective but may still be the most renown and vice versa.

    6. Speculative philosophy may not be accurate and it is based off of unsure evidence. Truth can not be deduced from any unsure evidence in the world. A good thing though is that it can provide a learning experience for the common philosopher.

    5. Hume's philosophy can be pragmatic because it relies on cause and effect and trial and error.
    6. Speculative philosophy can cause harm because it is based off of unproved evidence. It cannot be proven therefore it cannot be relied on.

  13. 1. Descartes' first main idea was that the essential thing that should be respected is the idea of quality over quantity. Establishing fewer and more developed ideas of philosophy was better.
    2. Hume stresses the importance of the original philosophy. That guideline for philosophizing was better and had bigger aspirations for humans.
    3. Hume believes the second approach is one that deals with negativity and disposing of many helpful ideas. It does not use constructive criticism but negative criticism pointing out what is wrong.
    4. I agree with the first philosophy more because of the better empathy and patience for progress, because accepting error and modifying is how progress is made.
    5. Hume's philosophy was defined more as pragmatic because it falls under the typical agenda for philosophizing. It examines a process and then modifies it from trial and error, a testing system.
    6. Speculative philosophy is different because it takes results and makes an assumption or prediction, and it can be harmful because often times those assumptions are personal and come from the depth of the philosopher.

  21. 1. Descartes legacy is quality over quantity. Not many of his works are still widely accepted today but it was the quality ideas in his works that keep his legacy in tact.
    2. Hume saw the first treatment of philosophy as a more pure and on point effort. Early philosophers did not allow their work to be overthought and lessened by being so.
    3. The second is less appealing to man according to Hume because it humanized the field too much for people.
    4. I found more truth in the second philosophy because it calls humans to rely on themselves to change things instead of an unknown power.
    5. Hume's work is pragmatic because his philosophy focuses on how to purify the field of philosophy moving forward.
    6. Speculative philosophy has no evidence to prove it is reasonable or plausible. It is somewhat positive because from time to time when you throw something at a wall, something will stick.

  23. 1) Humes' philosophy had a quality impact because he wrote on important subjects which is a symbol that he isn’t going for quantity but quality. Also he reflected on himself, therefore it shows he sought perfection showing another example of quality.
    2) Hume believes both ways contribute its own special merit. Hume believes the first treatment allows a man to place a value things. Hume says man will choose objects or follow a path depending on its detail, and then they will compare the objects to others and make a choice on the more attractive option.
    3) Hume believes the second treatment makes man a being who thinks more instead of one acts. They only seek approval within likeminded people such as themselves.
    4) I believe in the first way because I place values on objects everyday and I compare multiple things to each other. After comparing I choose the best option, for example when I go the vending machine and decide which snack.
    5) Hume’s philosophy is pragmatic because it is straight to the point. He searches for conclusions which is usually aided by factual information.
    6) Speculative philosophy causes confusion, the long you search the more questions are created. One positive things Speculative philosophy is meant to make things interesting or eccentric as it reflects painting.” Simple paintings are boring. “
